BLOOD AND SAND -- (1922)

Rudolph Valentino in one of his most famous roles. "A famous toreador is gored by 'another woman.' Silent film with organ score. 92 minutes. Available from VIDEO IMAGES.

BLOOD AND SAND -- (1941)

The matador, Juan Gallardo (Tyrone Power) dumps the faithful, Carmen (Linda Darnell) -- who, nevertheless stands by her matador -- for socialite, Dona Sol (Rita Hayworth). Familiar story adapted from the Blasco Ibañez novel that defined this genre. This film won an Academy Award for best color photography.

Back in 1941, Rita Hayworth was cast as Doña Sol in Blood and Sand. She had appeared in over thirty films at nearly every studio in Hollywood before it but after the great success she had in Blood and Sand she was suddenly called and "overnight" sensation. When casting Blood and Sand Fox tested dozens of young actresses for the part of Doña Sol. The director, Rouben Mamoumlian, later recalled "...the moment I saw Rita Hayworth walk I knew I had my Doña Sol...I was not the least surprised when she later became one of the great screen sirens."
Blood and Sand starts out showing Juan Gallardo (Tyrone Power) as a young boy. He goes to Madrid in the hopes of becoming a great matador and returns ten years later still struggling to achieve recognition. Upon his return he goes to meet up with the beauteous Carmen Espinosa (Linda Darnell) who has been waiting all these years for him. They get married and soon after, Juan's dream comes true and he becomes Spain's greatest matador.

Then, all is well until the beautiful temptress, Doña Sol (Rita Hayworth) enters his life. She sets her sights on him and Juan finds himself torn between his loving and faithful wife, Carmen and the beautiful, Doña Sol. Eventually he falls in love with Doña Sol and he loses Carmen. Soon after that, his affair with her begins to take its toll on his career. His skills as a matador go downhill and his new attitude loses him all his once faithful friends.

Eventually, Doña Sol tires of Juan and turns her attention to up and coming matador, Manolo de Palma (Anthony Quinn). Meanwhile, Juan continues on his downward spiral until his caring wife Carmen comes back to him. She tells him that she'd never actually left him, that she'd always watched over him and his confidence is renewed. So they make plans for their future together and he goes to his next bullfight saying that it'll be his last before retiring to be with her. Unfortunately however, he's caught off guard and is killed by the bull. Nonetheless, a hopeful Carmen says that to her, he'll never really die.

Rita's is by far the standout performance, in this, her first Technicolor film and it's really surprising to me she wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. Blood and Sand did win an Oscar however, for "Best Color Cinematography" and it was nominated for "Best Interior Set Decoration".

BLOOD AND SAND -- (May 1989) 96min COLOR

A rising matador leaves his wife for a glamorous but wicked woman. The torrid affair and his fame blaze brighter and brighter until both begin to spell his doom. Rudolph Valentino starred in the original version, but with a lot less sex.

BOLERO -- (1984)
Feel free to doze off during Bo Derek's sexual awakening scenes ... you won't be kicking yourself later for what you've missed.

THE BULLFIGHTER AND THE LADY -- (1951)
A Budd Boetticher feature--starring a blond Robert Stack (yes ... before TV's "Unsolved Mysteries" ... and even before "The Untouchables," he had a short hollywood career as a leading man), Joy Page and Gilbert Roland. Actually not a bad story, if you can keep from laughing at the dialog. The Script was even nominated for an Academy Award. Has the added treat of some nice taurine footage (a swarm of popular Mexican matadors from the 50s: Luis Briones, el Soldado (Luis Castro), Ricardo Torres, Calesero (Alfonso Ramirez), Andres Blando, Antonio Velazquez, Vizcaino (Arturo Alvarez), Juan Estrada, Chicuelin (Manuel Jimenez), and Feliz Brinoes) in this corny romantic story of cross-cultural seduction. Stack even does some of the work himself with a becerro or two. 124 minutes. B/W. Available from REPUBLIC PICTURES HOME VIDEO.

THE BULLFIGHTERS-- (1945)
Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy -- "south of the border" and in deep trouble. 61 minutes. Available from PLAYHOUSE VIDEO

BULLY FOR BUGS -- (1953)
Nobody can resist at least one taurine episode, not even Buggs Bunny. Here he burrows into the plaza and finds himself forced to confront a toro bravo. Available on laser disk ("Winner by a Hare") from WARNER HOME VIDEO.

MAGNIFICENT MATADOR -- (1955)--(COLOR)
Hollywood goes to the bullfights again. This time Maureen O'Hara plays the spoiled, rich, American preditor who falls head-over-heels for the brooding, tormented, about-to-retire matador, Luis Santos (Anthony Quinn) who has inexplicably run away prior to a corrida that was to occasion the alternativa of a young, up-and-coming bullfighter (Manuel Rojas). The mystery is solved 94 minutes later, after Maureen has conquered Tony and Tony has saved Marueen's life by caping a toro bravo (at Pasteje -- no surprise, since Carlos Arruza was the technical advisor on the film) with his plaid horse blanket. Some interesting historical shots. Color. Available from VCII.

SAPPY BULLFIGHTERS -- (1959)
This time it's the three stooges going taurine. The usual antics, with a real toro bravo substituted for the "theatrical" toro expected by matador, Curley Joe. Possibly also called "What's the Matador?"

SEÑOR DROOPY --(1949)
An animated cartoon in which Droopy and the Woolf stage a bullfight in the Chili Bowl (!)

 Television
THE FIRST BULLFIGHT-- An episode (4 minutes, b/w animation) of "Peabody's Improbable History," where Sherman and Mr. Peabody go back to see how the corrida de toros began. Originally broadcast either on "Rocky and His Friends" or "The Bullwinkle Show." Info provided in an interesting little pocket of material concerning the voiceover artists behind the characters in Jay Ward's cartoons.

BEVERLY HILLBILLY'S-- (COLOR)-- Jethro wants to be a bullfighter and no one can change his mind except of coarse the BULL.

LUCY GOES TO MEXICO-- (10/6/58) Thanks to some perfume Lucy buys at Maurice Chevalier's request, she is stopped by a customs agent (Charles Lane), who discovers a stowaway in her trunk...twice! LRFE are all detained. Ricky goes for the second time to straighten things out, but Lucy wants to help too, and ends up as a matador in a bullfight. From the Lucy/Desi Comedy Hours list posted by Nancy M. Schnepp
PASSPORT TO ADVENTURE--(19??)--A 30-minute episode focused on the encierro and Feria activity in Pamplona.
